What Does The Color Of My Jelly Bracelets

City: The library of the monastery Servite

So small publishes this time, to speak rapidly from the library of the former Servite Monastery near St. Michael's Church, seen during the European Heritage Days (in which I spent days to the national big TV, if so, true). And I will speak more willingly, as the splendid frescoes contained herein is a fine example of trompe l'oeil, specialty painter often referred to our as a second knife in many previous published: Josef Hager " (1726 - 1781, cf. Broumov Abbey, St Wenceslas Zderaz , or Francis Palko ).

Some quick benchmarks. The order of Servite, I had already spoken to you about the church St. Mary of the Annunciation on grass . The Servite monastery, it is more a result of reforms since 1786 joséphiennes. The buildings were redeveloped for housing secular profane, suddenly nothing to say. As for the sad case of the church St Michel linked to the monastery, needless to undo it is a closed case (say-so, I tell you not laconic references that I just asked, laughing). The Servite

arrived in Prague in 1360, therefore, but allocated in the Hussite wars, after they furious (Hussite) had burned some of their members (Servite). They returned to Prague in 1632, after the Battle of White Mountain, and began construction in their monastery in 1640 on the foundations of houses, "the donkey" and "the golden shaft" in the street " Melantrichova " . Initially, they saw little guys, like a home for 20 fellows, not over, not knowing what would be the demand on the market Servite Bohemia. And layout of the monastery dates from the time of first construction, between 1640 and 1664. Yet when asked thought, mid eighteenth century, there began a reconstruction in the late Baroque (1757 - 1766), for well over ensoutanés. And it is this time that our library. At first glance, this room is reduced when compared to other libraries girl uses this time ( "Klementinum" , "Strahov" ...). But in literary matters, everyone known quantity and quality are two separate measures (did you see that my published :-) And it is precisely this value (quality) that was based library of Servite. The main subjects taught and were obviously tudiées theology (and Mariology [studies of sly devils] in first place), astronomy, geometry, natural science and life (medicine, botany. ..) then the canon law, too. Ben precisely these disciplines are well represented on the fresco ceiling, pure Rococo style.

But just before, a few words on the painter. Josef Hager " is not especially known in Bohemia, and virtually unknown outside the borders of the Habsburg Empire. Too bad, because I personally find him very talented. He was a pupil of "Jan Karel Kovář" (1709-1749), more known (if not in my post), but appreciated by abbénédictins of "Břevnov-Broumov-Sázava" for which he produced many works, like the ceiling of the church of St Martin's sad village " Lidice " . And although he was his pupil (from "Jan Karel Kovář" ), from which he recovered many customers Josef Hager " undergoes much the influence of trompe-l'oeil of the prodigious " Andrea Pozzo " (cf. St Mop Rome ) than its master of Bohemia. For proof, in addition to our library girl uses, halftones domes to Pozzo in the church of the Holy Spirit "Lebanon" or St Pierrépaul of "Bezno" . And now, the frescoes of our library.

If you look up at the ceiling even more, at the top, you will notice how the sham fits perfectly within the piece, giving the impression of looking into the library, on the floor. The characters at the center, inside the dome symbolize religion and the church (go Gories). And as said, all around, the subjects taught. The cartridge in front of the entrance (the room) is a bushy-bearded scholar Servite (Doctor of Science) facing an array of virgin theological study and especially Marian. Right, a man sits on a chair, above the folder which is discarded human skin. He holds his left hand the famous lictor beam and represents the right (like if you do the jerk, your head will be decapitated, dismembered your body and your soul will go to hell moribund). man of Oriental type a red turban on his head is medicine, with medicinal plants and a herbarium at his feet. Worse astronomy, geometry, and science of the universe, they are represented by the bearded bald compass in hand. Note the map at his feet, bearing words "Made in China" ... I. Hager. As for small cartridges in monochromatic light purple, these are personal interpretations of allegories Cesare Ripa, whose reference "The Iconology " had a significant influence on the arts (as our Joseph). On the one side to the other, we can see Doctrina, Memoria, Vigilencia, Diligencia and Sergent Garcia. The cartridge number 5 cotton is not clear, because the guy is devoid of any attribute (visible, because under her dress ...), so it can be anyone (except my maid). Then we have Philosophia, Geometria, Veritas, and Meditation Intellectus. According to sources, these paintings date from around 1760 or 1770, unfortunately no certainty about the dates, if not restoration: December 2002. Today the library of the former Servite Monastery is a concert hall. It would be used by a school teacher of liturgical music and the jouage (jouement?) On period instruments under the name Collegium marianum - Týnská škola ". But I do not know more, so I shall say no more.

Oh look, if not anecdotal. In the 1680s, the court moved to Prague to Vienna to escape the plague of Austria, who arrived in Bohemia from the rest a few months later. Then they left for "Pardubice" , people of the court. Worse when the plague arrived in "Pardubice" , they went to Linz, and once the plague in Linz ... brief ... While the court of Vienna was in Prague (before the arrival of the plague), we planted a small theater in the palm of the game room, near the carousel jackasses (art gallery today), so to entertain the nobility. The room itself was revamped in 1743 as part of major celebrations of the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa of chicks-gray. But he did not like the decor, too Josef Hager " re-painted in new willy-pan-sections in 1754, during the second visit of the Empress. And it was beautiful, as critics of the time. But Marie-Thé barely had time to appreciate the beautiful paintings, the Prussians bombarded Prague (in 1757, as part of the war of seven years) and destroyed forever the building (among others). Balls.
